The Anchorage dementia day centre, based at 20-22 Lagoon Drive, Panmure, Auckland is run by The Selwyn Foundation under contract to Te Whatu Ora.
The centre offers a bright, warm and comfortable setting for older people with mild to moderate dementia, with a dedicated, sheltered area for outdoor activities and ample parking for family/whanau. The Anchorage team provides clients with vibrant and meaningful engagement in life activities within this welcoming and supportive environment.
At The Anchorage, clients’ participation and engagement are promoted through an array of stimulating social, cognitive and physical activities tailored for older adults living with dementia. These include reminiscing sessions, music and art therapy, gentle exercise, minibus outings and gardening. The programme is flexible and takes clients’ abilities into consideration, as well as their preferred level of participation, adapting to reflect the individual needs of those attending on that particular day.
The day programme service is available to older people diagnosed with dementia living in the community and who are referred by the Ministry of Health’s Needs Assessment and Service Coordination service (NASC). The information gathered during the NASC assessment is used in conjunction with input from the person’s family or whānau to develop an individual care plan. If the service is full, people can go on a waiting list until a suitable place becomes available.
